Time for discovery. I now have 3 temp transmitters in hand. The first is the one that came with the B. The second is the one that I bought from CarQuest, and the third came from Moss. Both 2 and 3 are Intermotor part numbers that are offered by Moss (131-565). Now for the resistance values. Number 1 was really bad, and it had a resistance value of 1.2, and it always read cooler than I thought it should. Number 2 had a value of .75, and number 3 had a value of .78 (All values read off my multimeter). The higher the resistance, the lower the temperature read on the gauge. I elected to use number 3. Number two read high and almost caused the needle to rise to the red on the gauge during its first drive. Concerting, but no steam coming from the system. Then bought a temperature scanner from HF for $20. Made sure that the coolant level was topped off and the system was burped. On the test drive the gauge on the dash rose to about the 75% range and remained there as I drove the B at a steady 55 MPH. In moderate traffic the temp rose to 80% of range and then the cooling fan turned on. Temperature measured at the top of the radiator was 187 degrees, and the bottom was 137. Temperature at the area around the transmitter was 189 and between the middle spark plugs was 191. The gauge never read higher than 80% range during the test drive. From all this I gather that the cooling system is working properly. That evening went for a drive and the cooling system acted as it did during the test drive. I'll do more testing in the next few days. One more problem solved. Hopefully.
