Front Brake Calipers
Posted on: Wednesday March 16, 2011
Someone on the forum described a front caliper rebuild as one of the easier "big" jobs that you can do and I agree. I encountered some of the same problems as others in regards to removing the pistons, but in my opinion, compressed air is the way to go. Go slow... be careful (don't lose a finger in the process)... and make sure that you have a piece of wood between the pistons and you will be OK. The inlet side piston willl probably be the first to move, so let it break free, use c-clamps...
Minor Rebuild Of Front Suspension

I say "minor" because I'm not doing anything with the swivel axle... basically just replacing the rubber bushings and springs. I'm following a nice library article by Art Pfenninger and it seems to address everything that I have encountered so far. There's quite a few opinions on the forum... some even suggesting that you start by dropping the crossmember, but that seemed a little drastic for what I wanted to do. Some of the "suspects" were therefore ruled out... like the heater motor and the windshield wipers. I began to suspect the gauge voltage stabilizer since everything that wasn't working (fuel gauge, tachometer, oil pressure gauge) went through it,...
Brakes And Such...

OK, the engine runs, so what's the next step? The PO had mentioned a possible problem with the differential, but that turned out to be simply a stuck parking brake. The right rear drum wasn't going to budge, but by disconnecting the parking brake and running the adjuster all the way in, it finally came off. All of the brakes looked like they had virtually no miles on them, but I wasn't about to try to clean them up, or even consider using any of those parts. Brakes are far too important,...
