Quintin Womack's 1971 MG MGB GT
|
This fine specimen of an MGB GT is the COVID project for me and my middle son.
Long story, short....
My dad bought it for my younger brother sometime in the early 80's. The purchase date is an estimation of my brother's 16th birthdate on 10/31/1984. He drove it daily for several years and several motors. I did some horse swapping to get it from him with a blown motor. Sometime in 1989, I got it running with the current 18GB motor from a 1967 B GT. I drove it for a few months before I started a "quick and cheap" restoration. As we all know, there is nothing quick and cheap when it comes to restorations of anything, let alone a small and quirky British sports car. The car sat for about 30 years disassembled before my middle son showed an interest in it. I made him a deal that if he helped me finish it, I would give it to him. We spent about a year and a half getting it all put back together and got it to this state in February of 2023. We restored back to original as much as possible while maintaining a strict budget. New parts include:
Watford Seat Covers from mgmart.com
Carpet set from Carrelli
New paint shot by us at home
New 205/60-14 Falken tires
New front and rear brakes
New master cylinder
We also painstakingly polished all the trim by hand, wet sanded the entire car with 1500 grit, changed all fluids and rebuilt the SU HS4 carbs. Me and my son both take pride in that all the work was performed by us at home. We also get a lot of compliments from people as we drive and show it locally.
Future plans for it include installing a set of wire wheels, rebuilding the transmission, and performing a full overhaul of the HS4's.
