“Laddie Gordon Special”
1949 MG TC “LADDIE GORDON” SPECIAL
2ND PLACE IN THE 1949 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
11TH PLACE IN THE 1952 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
Imported into Australia in 1949 as a new MG TC, this special was destined for greatness! Stripped down in Cessnock NSW the “Laddie Gordon” Special was hand crafted, and ready to compete at the 14th Australian Grand Prix held in Leyburn QLD on the 18th of September.
Finishing the race in Second Place, behind a 3.6L Delahaye 135MS piloted by John Crouch. The Supercharged 1.3L MG TC showed phenomenal reliability and speed beating competition including 10 other TB/TC's, numerous V8 specials, a Jaguar SS100 and a Bugatti Type 37!
Under new ownership the “Laddie Gordon” Special was entered in the 1952 Grand Prix, finishing in 11th position from a grid of 43 including makes such as Maybach, Talbot-Largo, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti, Maserati, Jaguar and Cooper.
Sold twice after the '52 Grand Prix, in 1955 the TC was involved in an accident at the very track that the 1949 Aust GP was held, that left both the driver (Neville Huch) and the car badly burnt. Sold in burnt condition to “Bowman” the TC's body and chassis were separated.
The body was sold in 1955 to Leo Spies, changing hands another three times. The New TC special was log booked in 1978, and raced till 1989, and was purchased by Peter Gostelow in 1999, it would take Peter only a year to chase down the original chassis that had passed through only one set of hands since “Bowman”.
Reuniting the two halves of the car, Peter Gostelow resurrected the “Laddie Gordon” Special and received a CAMS Logbook and Certificate of Description legitimizing the history on the 3rd of July 2002, 47 years since it was last in one piece!
