"Turd"

Triumph #4 after a 63 TR4, 65 TR4A and 71 TR6. These all happened to have wire wheels, and my choice for this car. The GT6 represents one of the quentessential British GTs and the Triumph model that looks particularly good with wires. Lateral give, being prone to flats and hard to keep clean are acceptable wire wheel trade offs, when considering the look. After all, character is what makes these cars so endearing and memorable.

When purchased, a lot was required to make the car right. The suspension and interior were terminal, but it was a strong runner and rust free - a good project candidate.
My intent is to sort out the mechanicals, add some minor performance upgrades and eventually paint it BRG - classic, old school.
My last project was a nut and bolt restoration of a Europa Special - so perfect, I was afraid to drive it. I don't plan on doing that this time.

So far I have replaced the trunnions, installed GAZ height and ride adjustable shocks with 480# springs, rebuilt the steering and replaced all suspension bushings.
The orange (corduroy, vinyl, shag carpet) interior is now all new, sporting black Bridge of Weir (Aston Martin) leather with new seat foams and I've gone with a 13 inch steering wheel.
The gold painted disk wheels have been replaced with used wires - sandblasted, powdercoated with 5/8 inch spacers for the rears (helps fill the inset wheel / cavity).
I now have a Monza exhust system and heat wrapped Pacesetter header. It sounds so good I may never hook-up the new audio. I've installed gas struts and knock off Cibie Z-beam headlamps (with relays) in the bonnet and I'm refitting the missing windshield and backlight brite trim.
All body dents are removed, new Talbot side mirrors and the paint, wheeled-out (for the interim).

It's great to be back!

Gotta love the wires.Got a set for my 71 gt6 but in rough shape. That color really suits the car and wheels.

Thanks Al, my wires are in pretty rough shape too. Of the used set of five, three have backlash in the splines and the other two (that I thought were perfect) won't take a balance. From the looks of it, I'll probably wind up buying four new ones. I wanted to at least get an image to inspire me to continue down that path. I'm not a big fan of the current Russet color applied by a PO. Originally it was Saffron. Both were popular in the 70's but not my choice or preference. I'm actually getting used to the brown, but since there are so many chips, dents and sanding marks telegraphing through, it needs new paint regardless. Believe me, it doesn't look very good, up-close.

Is any Triumph really finitoed?
I've got all new interior pieces that have been waiting for installation until the respray, but I thinking that may be a couple years off. Now that I've had the wire wheels refurbished and all the body dings popped out by my paintless dent removal guy, I think that once I wheel out the paint, it won't look too bad. I'm probably going to keep enjoying it while sorting out the remaining gremlins. Might as well put the interior in. I know it will make the rest of the car's appearance pale by comparison, but screw it - that's what I see while in the driver's seat. It should eliminated some squeaks and rattles, too.
