Engines

VS400

The VS400 is a middleweight Street motorcycle. It features a water-cooled 399 cc, 4-stroke V-twin engine capable of producing 33 BHP.

VS750

The model with 747 cc engine capacity was produced specifically for the US market between 1985 and 1991. The engine is a four-stroke, water-cooled, OHC, 45-degree V-twin[2] producing a maximum of 55 HP at 7,500 rpm with a compression ratio of 10:1, giving the bike a top speed of 165 km/h. Each cylinder has its own Mikuni carburetor.

VS1400

HP=72 with torque produced approx 115 Nm @ 3200 rpm. Total fuel capacity ≈ 13L (3.3 gallons). Fuel consumption 38-46 mpg.

Transmission

Transmission is 5-speed, constant mesh. The VS1400 used a 4-speed transmission until 1997 when adding a 5th ratio . All models are shaft driven.

Brakes

Stopping power for models 805cc's and less is/was provided by a single disc at the front and drum brake at the rear. 1985 - 1987 models could be easily recognized as these have front brake rotor on the left side instead of right side found on later models. Their sissy bar is also shorter.

1400 and 1500 Intruders offer(ed) single disc brakes, front and rear.

Special features

In 1990 a MAP boost sensor was added to the VS1400 model to increase highway mileage. This correlated to a change in the ignitor unit, which went from a two socket 4/6 pin configuration, to a 4/9 pin configuration, with the left/right orientation of the two sockets reversed.
