Why would you want to pay for a membership when all the information on this site is already free? Well for one, all the money goes towards maintaining and improving this website, so it's a way of giving back to the auto community, adding new features and updates, new technical articles, server hardware upgrades, bandwidth bills and the like. If you compare the cost to a "normal" car club membership, I think you'll find you get good value!
