Dash And Heater

Getting the dash apart has been more of a task than I expected. It needed to come out because the top of the vinyl is coated with mold. Also, there was a burnt and bubbled patch around the headlamp switch.
The heater box was a little hard to remove. I ended up drilling out one of the screws holding it to the body. It’s in good shape, but it needs some paint. And the gasket around the base has fallen apart.
I should be pretty good at this by the time I am finished. Brit Bits in Rye, NH has been very helpful.

End Of Old Interior

Today I was able to get the seats, the last of the carpet, and the last of the trim removed.
Getting the old seat belts removed took the most energy. A little "bolt and nut buster" spray really helped loosen the nuts underneath the car. I think the old seat belts hold that musty odor more than anything else does.
I know the floorboards and everything else looks rusted, but it really is old glue that is making the metal look so bad.
Frodo the Frenchie is not too happy with the slippery metal. If we get some warm weather, he should have something to grip. Before anything goes back in, I will remove and recover the dash. I am also going to give the floors some fresh paint for protection.

Starting Interior

I have enjoyed almost every minute that I have spent with this car except for the strong smell of mildew and mustiness. I drove this car home in a strong rain, so the smell became stronger as I drove. I tried cleaning the carpet and upholstery but the smell was part of the fabric. The carpet was mostly decayed so the decision to replace that was not difficult. I never realized how many small pieces made up the carpet in this car. I ordered a kit that makes the interior look so much better. The photo is a before photo. The carpet around the console was most in need of replacement.
The seats look nice but the seams are very brittle.
